If you’re looking for a psychological thriller that hooks you early and keeps you second-guessing everything, THIS is the book for you.
Exclusive Hollywood rehab center meets Shutter Island. Locked room thriller, full of atmosphere and claustrophobia. And it's deeply unsettling.
Meg, a tough undercover investigator with her own demons and addictions, checks into The Clinic, a luxury rehab facility for the rich, isolated in the snowy Pacific Northwest. She's not there to get clean herself. No, her famous sister, Haley, died while in treatment, supposedly of suicide. But Meg can't believe that's the truth.
This book works. Meg is flawed herself, making her the perfect unreliable narrator. Playing detective while battling withdrawal doesn't make for a clear-headed person and the reader experiences that fog through Meg's eyes. As she second-guesses her self, you are second-guessing right along with her (was that real? or was she hallucinating?). The other patients and staff at the facility are so well-written that I visualized real people who might fit the role. The setting is practically a character in and of itself. The striking contrast between a high-end, ultra-lux therapy spa and the brutal, frozen wilderness it sits in heightens the dread and urgency for Meg and the others at The Clinic.
Quinn does a wonderful job delving into the ugly realities of addiction and rehab. It's not a side story to fill the space and set the scene for the sake of the story's plot. The Clinic doesn't end in a neat and logical conclusion. It's a bit chaotic, and plays at the edges of believability near the end, but it's worth it for a plot twist that ultimately leaves the reader satisfied.
